Real Bakuchiol Firming Serum

The NEOGEN Real Firming Bakuchiol Serum is a lightweight anti-aging serum designed to support hydration, smoother skin texture, elasticity and a more even-looking complexion. Its formula combines bakuchiol with niacinamide, adenosine, peptides, vitamin C derivatives and several moisturizing ingredients.

Despite its name, I would not consider this primarily a high-strength bakuchiol treatment. According to NEOGEN, the formula contains approximately 0.01% bakuchiol, which is a part of phyto-retinol firming complex. Bakuchiol is a plant-derived antioxidant that has attracted interest in anti-aging skincare because research suggests it may influence some pathways involved in collagen metabolism and photoaging.

Bakuchiol is often described as a “natural retinol alternative,” but it is important to distinguish the two. Bakuchiol is not a retinoid, and the clinical evidence supporting retinoids remains considerably stronger, as there are also more scientific evidence. At the concentration used in this serum, I consider bakuchiol a complementary antioxidant and skin-conditioning ingredient rather than the primary anti-aging treatment.

One of the more relevant ingredients in this formulation is actually niacinamide, which appears high in the ingredient list. This well-studied form of vitamin B3 supports epidermal barrier function and can help improve uneven pigmentation, dullness and overall skin tone.

The serum also contains adenosine, a skin-conditioning ingredient commonly used in Korean anti-aging formulations to support smoother-looking skin.

A combination of Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 and Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 complements the formula. Peptides are interesting supportive ingredients in anti-aging skincare, although I would consider them complementary to established actives rather than a replacement for retinoids or daily photoprotection.

For antioxidant support, the formula contains Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, a stable vitamin C derivative, together with smaller amounts of ascorbic acid and vitamin E. These ingredients complement the formula's focus on maintaining a brighter, more even-looking complexion.

Hydration comes primarily from glycerin, butylene glycol, Glycereth-26, diglycerin and sodium hyaluronate, which attract and retain water within the upper layers of the skin. Squalane provides additional emollient support, helping the skin feel softer and more supple.

Overall, I see this as a hydrating and smoothing serum with multiple supportive anti-aging ingredients, rather than an intensive bakuchiol treatment. It is particularly suitable for someone who wants a gentle daily formula focused on hydration, radiance and early signs of skin aging.
