The esfolio Bakuchiol Wrinkle Ampoule is a lightweight serum designed to support hydration, smoother skin texture and a more even-looking complexion. The formula combines bakuchiol with niacinamide, retinyl palmitate, adenosine and multiple hydrating ingredients.

The serum contains bakuchiol at 100 ppm (0.01%). Bakuchiol is a plant-derived antioxidant that has attracted considerable interest in anti-aging skincare because research suggests it may influence some of the same cellular pathways associated with retinoid activity. Importantly, however, bakuchiol is not a retinoid, and its clinical evidence is considerably less extensive than that of retinol.

The concentration matters as well. At 0.01%, the amount of bakuchiol in this ampoule is considerably lower than concentrations commonly investigated in clinical studies. I would therefore consider it a complementary antioxidant and skin-conditioning ingredient rather than presenting this product as an intensive bakuchiol treatment.

The formulation also contains retinyl palmitate, a vitamin A ester. It requires several conversion steps before reaching biologically active retinoic acid and is substantially milder than retinol or retinal. This makes it an interesting supporting ingredient, but I would not expect the same effects as from a dedicated retinol or retinal serum.

One of the more relevant ingredients in the formula is niacinamide. This well-studied form of vitamin B3 supports epidermal barrier function and can help improve uneven pigmentation, dullness and overall skin tone.

A combination of glycerin, butylene glycol, Glycereth-26, trehalose and sodium hyaluronate provides substantial humectant support. These ingredients attract and retain water within the upper layers of the skin, helping the complexion appear smoother and more plumped.

Overall, I see this primarily as a gentle hydrating and smoothing serum with supportive anti-aging ingredients, rather than a high-strength retinoid or bakuchiol treatment.

Pro Tips

  • Bakuchiol is frequently marketed as a “natural retinol alternative,” but I prefer to distinguish the two. Bakuchiol is not a retinoid, and in this formula it is present at only 0.01%. I would therefore choose this ampoule mainly for gentle supportive anti-aging ingredients, for a retinol-naive skin.
